Breeders and Puppies
Buying or adopting a sheltie puppy is a big step and requires planning.
It is important to make sure any sheltie puppy you might wish to purchase comes from an ANKC registered breeder that meets the breeder code of ethics.
Key questions to ask a breeder will be about health screening of the parents and puppies for hereditary conditions in shelties. Thankfully – shelties are a robust breed and these are generally few.
An ANKC breeder will also not sell you a puppy until at least 8 weeks of age and the puppy will come to you vaccinated, microchipped, health checked and wormed. The puppy should also come with information about diet, exercise and training and general care. The puppy should also be registered with DogsSA (the ANKC association in South Australia) and you should ask for your puppy's pedigree papers. These will generally be transferred into your name when you purchase your puppy. Breeders MUST transfer these papers within 14 days of sale. You should also receive your puppies vaccination certificate and health check certificate from the vet.
This also applies if you purchase an older dog. Vaccination certificates and ANKC pedigree papers should be provided here as well.
If you don't receive these, you should contact DogsSA with the details of your puppy or older dog and the breeder of your puppy and ask for advice.
Be prepared to wait for the right puppy.
We have listed here the ANKC sheltie breeders in South Australia who are also members of the Shetland Sheepdog Club of South Australia.
